Today, more than ever, more people are choosing to work at home. The search for a better work-life balance, rising property costs, the availability of new technologies and an upsurge in domestic entrepreneurship all contribute to the continuing upward trend in people making the decision to work from home.

According to Money Magazine, every 11 seconds someone starts a home based business that allows them to work at home. Also 20% of work at home businesses gross between 100k and 500k per year.

There are more type of businesses suitable for work at home entrepreneurs than ever before. Modern technology has opened up huge opportunities and that has lead to the creation of many more different types of businesses that can be run from home due to cheaper equipment and better means of communication.

World wide the work at home trend has been on the increase in the past few years;

  • US - The findings from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 20.6million people (15.1% of its workforce aged 16+) are engaged in work at home businesses.
  • Canada - In the year 2000, approximately 2.8 million (17%) Canadian workers (1.4 million or 10% of employees, and 1.4 million or 50% of the self-employed) did some or all of their work from home, up from 2.1 million (16%) in 1995.
  • UK - Latest figures from the UK National Statistics agency confirms that there is no levelling off in the increase of home-based work. 3.1 million people now officially work mainly from home. A further 1 million people in the survey were found to be working at home on a more occasional basis.
  • Australia - Overall, the prevalence of teleworking or home-based work in Australia has increased from a low base over the last decade. Measures of telework incidence change depending on the definition used, but there are around 1 million or 11 per cent of workers in Australia regularly working from home.
